What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialist, gentle massage technique that stimulates the natural movement of lymph fluid through the body's lymphatic system. Developed by Dr Emil Vodder, MLD uses precise, light rhythmic strokes to activate lymph vessels and redirect fluid away from areas of congestion. It supports the immune system, reduces swelling, assists detoxification and promotes profound relaxation. At Lymph Lab, MLD is performed exclusively by Registered Nurses BSc (Hons) with specialist lymphatic training.
How soon after surgery should I begin lymphatic drainage?
For most cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries, lymphatic drainage can begin as early as 48–72 hours post-surgery, once the initial acute inflammation phase has settled. The earlier you begin, the better your outcomes — early MLD significantly reduces swelling, bruising and the risk of fibrosis. We always liaise with your surgical team to confirm the appropriate start time for your specific procedure and healing status.
Is lymphatic drainage painful?
MLD is an extremely gentle technique — it should never cause pain. The pressure used is very light, barely heavier than the weight of a coin, and the strokes follow the natural direction of lymphatic flow. Most clients describe sessions as deeply relaxing, with many falling asleep during treatment. If you have any sensitivity post-surgery, our nurses will always work carefully around any tender areas and adapt pressure accordingly.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your individual goals and treatment type. As a general guide: Post-surgical recovery typically requires 6–12 sessions; Detox therapy packages start from 3–6 sessions; Wellness maintenance is usually monthly; Body sculpting courses are typically 6–10 sessions. During your initial consultation, our nurses will assess your needs and design a personalised treatment plan with a recommended course of sessions.
What is the difference between MLD and a regular massage?
MLD and traditional massage are completely different techniques. Regular massage works on muscles using deeper pressure to release tension. MLD uses extremely light, precise strokes specifically designed to target the superficial lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin. It requires specialist training and anatomical knowledge of the lymphatic system. At Lymph Lab, our nurses hold both nursing qualifications and specialist MLD certifications — ensuring a truly clinical-grade treatment.
What are the benefits of detox therapy?
Our detox therapy combines lymphatic drainage with targeted body treatments to support the body's natural detoxification pathways. Benefits include: elimination of accumulated toxins, reduced bloating and fluid retention, improved energy levels and mental clarity, brighter and clearer skin, improved immune function, hormonal balance support, and a profound sense of renewal and wellbeing. Many clients notice visible improvements in skin quality from their very first session.
Which surgeries benefit most from post-op lymphatic drainage?
Almost any surgical procedure benefits from post-op MLD, but it is particularly impactful after: liposuction, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), Brazilian butt lift (BBL), breast augmentation or reduction, body lift surgery, arm and thigh lifts, mummy makeover procedures, and C-section recovery. MLD significantly reduces the swelling, bruising and discomfort common after these procedures whilst protecting and enhancing your surgical results.
How do I book an appointment?
Booking is simple. You can book via our online contact form, send us a WhatsApp message, or call us directly. We recommend booking a free initial consultation first so our nurses can assess your needs and design your personalised treatment plan. We offer flexible appointment times including evenings and Saturdays to suit your schedule.
What should I wear or bring to my appointment?
We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. You will be provided with disposable underwear for body treatments if needed. Please avoid applying heavy body creams or oils before your session. For post-surgical clients, please bring any relevant surgical notes or aftercare instructions from your surgeon. All consultation information is handled with complete confidentiality.
Can lymphatic drainage help with lymphoedema?
Yes. MLD is a clinically recognised first-line treatment for lymphoedema (chronic lymphatic swelling). Our Registered Nurses are trained in the Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) approach used for lymphoedema management. If you have a lymphoedema diagnosis, we recommend booking an initial consultation so we can review your case and develop an appropriate treatment protocol.
